This decal sheet contains decals for 4 aircraft from VF-103.

  • 162918, AA-100 2004
  • 161855, AA-112 2002
  • 162691, AA-102 1999
  • 161862, AA-107 2004

The sheet looks like it contains enough stencils for two aircraft, but you will need to check and count for yourself to be sure. In this scale, there are kits by Hasegawa, Hobby Boss and Revell.

The decals arrive in a self-sealing plastic bag, with a tab at the top for hanging the bag on a sales rack in a store. The top folds over the bottom of the bag and has a sticky stripe on it to seal it. I found that the sticky stripe tends to stick to everything, so I folded the sticky tab back on itself and sealed the bag with a second, smaller, piece of tape. This way I can put things back inside the bag a lot easier. Inside the bag are:

  • One A4/Letter sized, double sided, colour sheet of decal placement instructions.
  • One large decal sheet.
  • Two small decal sheets.

The instruction sheet uses one half of one side for the cover. If you open the sheet you will see port and starboard views of all 4 aircraft, 2 are hi-viz and 2 are lo-viz. Part views are also shown of the inside view of the all the twin tails and the external fuel tanks for 3 of the 4 aircraft. Colours for the aircraft are given in Mr. Color and Humbrol.

On the back of the instruction sheet you can see a top and bottom view of AA-112 and also a small top and bottom of AA-100. The differences between AA-112 and 102 and 107 are explained with some extra bracketed numbers on the larger views of AA-112. These views show mostly stencils, and again the colours are shown in Mr. Color and Humbrol.

The decals themselves are by Cartograph, so the quality of obviously very good. The amount of extra carrier film seems to be almost non-existent in places, and a bit larger in places where there’s a chance the decals will fold back on themselves as you use them. The decals themselves seem very thin, in register and the colours seem good too. All in all, everything we have come to expect from Cartograph. One of the small sheets contains the stars and bars and the second is a sheet for the lighting panels that you will have to cut to size yourself.

To summarize, this is a good quality, highly detailed decal sheet. This set is comprehensive, clearly laid out and the instructions are easy to understand. Overall, this a good quality set and well worthy of being used on your F-14B build

Many thanks to DXM Decals for the review sample. You can buy this set from the DXM Decals shop.
